It depends. Moving is an expensive task. You may ask if it is worth the high price tag. We say if you can afford the expense, then it is absolutely worth it. Benefits of hiring the pros include time savings, safety to your items, and overall peace of mind. However, if you are tight on money, have several able-bodied friends, and the scope of your move isn’t too large, then you can move yourself with the proper preparation.
You have many options for moving, with the cheapest option being a full do-it-yourself (DIY) move, and most expensive being to hire full-service movers. Scroll down to tip # three to find out how to hire movers on a budget.
If hiring movers, you can lower your cost by doing some of the work yourself to expedite their process. Here are some steps you can take:
*Don’t skimp on the moving company however. Reputable movers charge a high price for a reason, and the price is well-worth it. If a moving company quotes significantly less than the competition, be wary of them.
The sooner you can start preparing for your move, the better. Start chipping away at certain tasks well in advance.
1 month out: Book your moving company – the sooner you can do this the better.
3 weeks out: Begin packing – pack non-essentials first such as storage items, spare bedding, and decor.
2 weeks out: Switch your cable, utilities, and mailing address.
1 week out: Begin to finalize packing, arrange a sitter for your children, and begin cleaning.
1 day out: Finalize packing and create a moving plan.
Moving day: Greet your movers, give them a walk-through and let them know any special instructions, and be available to direct the process.
The primary services that movers provide include packing, disassembly, padding/protecting, loading their truck, transporting the items in their truck, unloading the truck, reassembly, and even unpacking your items if you wish.
Intrastate moves (short distance in-state or in-town moves) bill by the hour, typically $40-$60 per mover per hour. Interstate moves (long distance state to state moving) will bill by the hour plus a transportation fee that is a function of the total weight of items moved and items travelled. Sometimes packing/unpacking will be billed separately per box. Additional fees include insurance and taxes.
Moving companies will not move hazmat items such as gasoline or fireworks. If moving a lawn mower or other motorized equipment, be sure to drain the gas out prior. Other items they typically will not move include plants or perishable food.
While not expected, it is usually a nice gesture to tip your movers. A standard amount would be $20 cash per mover per full day’s work. Don’t worry about tipping a percentage of the total bill.
Moving coverage is often times mistaken for insurance. Moving companies are not allowed to sell insurance, rather a coverage from damage. You will have several options for coverage from damage:
Released value protection: This comes standard for no additional fee and covers 60 cents per pound, regardless of the damaged items actual value.
Full value protection: The moving company is responsible for replacing, repairing or reimbursing you at fair market value for your damaged item.
*Movers are not required to reimburse you for any item valued at more than $100/lb. unless specifically listed on your moving documents.
Expanded coverage: Some moving companies will give you the option of setting your own value per pound being moved. This will cost more and need to be agreed upon in advance, clearly stated in your documents.
*This is a basic overview on how moving coverage works, but may change and is not comprehensive. Be sure to get the full details from your moving company and read the paperwork in detail prior to your move.
Prior to signing your Bill of Lading document at the end of your move, inspect your items for any damage. If there is damage, notate that on the bill of lading. After your movers leave, follow up with them to file a claim.
